 *  Create understanding for the person with autism
        through associative learning
        by making connections.

KEY:    Link learning to the autistic person's
                1) personal experiences,
                2) physical experiences and/or
                3) sensory experiences.

NOTE:  Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder are literal thinkers and find it difficult to think in the abstract.  Therefore, they often find it hard to understand inferences, "reading between the lines," idoms or sayings that are commonly used.

Temple Grandin, an autistic woman with her Ph.D. in animal science said, "My thinking pattern always starts with specifics and works towards generalization in an associational and non-sequential way." p. 16
