   pictures and/or written words

The visuals help create understanding for the person with autism by seeing the picture (creating an association to what was verbally said) and by processing the written words.  The visuals also provide a point of reference while the individual is processing the information.

NOTE:  Auditory information on its own, especially a lot of spoken words, can be very difficult to process for the person with autism.
