Writing Samples From Our School-Wide Write
The following pieces of writing are samples of what students have done. All students wrote on the topic of, My Favorite Animal. The samples displayed meet or exceed expectations. The work is unedited and presented as students wrote it, in draft form. These samples are on display to show how the writing skills of students develop through the grades.
GRADE ONE
Dogs
Dogs like to play a lot with peple.
When peple throw a ball the dog
ran's to cach the ball. Sumtimes
dogs bit and scrach. Dogs like to
be peted by peple. Dogs like to
lik peple. It tikls when they lik.
Dog's are good pets.
GRADE TWO
Dogs
There are lots of kinds of dogs in the world. There are Basit hownds. There are Begols. There are Chwowas. There are st. Bernards. Dogs can hear beter then pepol. Dogs can come in Big or small. Also diffrint culers. Dogs can have slopey ears or not.
Fish
Fish have scales. Scales help the fish breve under the sea. Fish swim fast. There are meny kines of fish. Fish do tolk but not in huomin langwig. Fish do not have legs they have fins. Fish live in the sea.
GRADE THREE
Chipmuks
Chipmuks have very sharp teeth. They are smaller then Squral's. They eat furit, bugs, leves. Thay Live in holes in trees. Chipmuks are cute but Very vishes. Thar enemies are Burds, Cats.
Tratualas
Tratualas are all different color. They have eight legs and Theyr body can be big as a coffee cup. They are a kind of spider.
They eat bugs and They love to eat birds that fly by ther nest.
Trantualas live in different plasses. Like gungle and some forests and Aspeshaly the deserts.
GRADE FOUR
Dogs
Dogs can be brown, white, Black, gold, light brown and cream. Some dogs have Large tails and some have non-large tails. Some are small and some are big. Most dog's have 4 legs, But some have three. All dogs have ears. Dogs eat kibble, dog cookies and water. Some dogs eat ranch dip, carrots, brockly and meat. When dogs are born, there called puppies. Puppies don't wear diapers. Puppies are small and have stubby tails. Puppies and dogs have only one Habitat and there called Homes. Dog have two enemies called cats and Bears, Dog are very interesting animals.
Monkey's
Monkey's are furry, big and small. Some monkey's are brown but some are other colers. They live around rainforestes and tropical water. There protection is trees. The only thing They eat is bananas. They are cute and small when they are babies. There enemies are only people, pochers and other animals.
GRADE FIVE
Green Anole
My favorite animal is the Green Anole. I have two green anoles, their names are Matt and Speedy.
The anoles diet includes crickets, spiders, grubs and so on. Anoles can sometimes be quite picky about what they eat.
Their habits include sunning and scaning their surroundings for food.
Their habitats are usually trees or bushes and they are quite common in the U.S. They are primaly terestrial to anywhere warm in North America.
The green anoles lifetime expectancy is usually 8-14 years depending on the circumstances, i.e. do they live somewhere warm enough, can they find enough food etc.
The green anole can be a cool pet, but it can be expencive to take care of.
Lynx
My favourit animal is a Lynx. They are my favourit animal because they are mysterious.
I think the way Lynx catch there prey is really cool. They climb trees and wait for there prey to pass by and then pounce on them. There main food is snowshoe hare.
Lynx have light brown or gray fur. They have a pointed, beard like, and have a short tale. There feet are big and fluffy, and are like snowshoes that help them go around in the snow.
Lynx mate between Febuary and March. The average is two to four kittens when they have birth.
There are lots of cool things about Lynx. That is why they are my favourit animal.
Wolf
My favourite animal is a wolf because like dogs and animals that like to hunt.
Wolves are domestic dog' that can live in woods, all the way to the frezzing Arctic! Some wolves live high up in the rocky mountains.
Most wilves live in burrows deep in the ground because it's warm and good place to raise their pups.
At first, wolf pups cn't see and have t oget food brought back to them. Then ov rhte nesxt few weeks, their eyes open up and they get to see for their first time.
Wolves like to hunt in packs. When their in there packs, they usually surround their pry, if it's adeer, or something bog like a moose, or bear, bu usually deer d moose.
The Platypus
My favourite animal is a platypus. I like this animal because it's unusewal.
Platypus get food by their bill.
They eat worms a shellfish. When thay get older thay lack teeth and use their horny pads this is in the back of their jaw. I think this is a vary different way of geting their food.
The platypus does not look like other animals. Thay have a bill that is broad, flat and hairless. Thay also have a tail thats broad and flat. The tail helps with steering. The platypus has webbing on it's feet. The webbing can poll back to dig in the grouwnd. This way of diging is cool.
Most platypus live in streams and make burrows. The streams in Australia are where the burrows are made. It whould not be a cozzey place for me to live in.
I'm glad that I pick this favourite animal because I have others!
GRADE SIX
Horses
My favourite animals are horses. I like all types of horses not one specific type. There are many different breeds, sizes, and colours of horses
Some breeds of horses are all the same colour while other breeds of horses can be different. All bays are brown with black points (points are the mane, tail and bottom of the legs on a horse). Arabians can be any colour that horses usally are like black or brown. Pintos or Points have patches of white and another colour. Most all white horses aren't really white they're light gray. Truly white horses have pink eyes and hooves. Horses can be called different names. A horse under three years , is a colt which is a male or a foal which is a female. A horse over 3 years is called a stallion, which is male or a mare, which is female. Male horses that cannot have any young are called geldings. All breeds of horses and ponys are called these names.
There are many different breeds of horses. They come in many different shapes and sizes. I like lots of different animals but horses are my favourite.
GRADE SEVEN
The Mighty Lion
In the large radiant savannahs of Africa there lies the king of Africa, the lion. The lion is the king of the desert some people say. The lion is part of the cat family. The lion has a big fluffy mane around his neck also has a strong jaw with sharp teeth. Both male and female hve yellow fur bur the female des not have a mane.
The strong feroucious cat feeds on raw meat from antelope, wild buffulo etc. The females of the lions go out to the mighty savannah and hunt for meat for her starving young. The male stays home with the other lions familys protechting the nest and younger lions. The lion aren't solitarie hunters they hunt in fairly large packs from 4-7 and can devastating close up.
Marmots
Marmots are adorable, unique fascinating creatures. They range in size, and are roughly as big as a microwave. These furry rodents are mostly a mixed brown, with a warm yellow tummy. Marmots have sharp black claws, beaver-like teeth and a slightly resemble a large gopher.
Marmots live in BC; they make their homes in remote areas and maintains. Because of their selective habitat marmots are an endangered species. They choose this climate for two reasons: one, the summers are hot and good for sunbathing, and two, the winters are cold and snowy, therefor it is swell and dandy for hibernating in.
Marmots like to have fun. They sunbathe, pop in and out of holes and eat.
Cats
The cat is a very unique and beautiful creature. Its eyes can be shades of stunning copper or gleaming blue. Its fur is very soft and can be exotic colours like lilac, or it can be a slightly more plain colour, such as white.
The cat is also very unique in its behavioural ways. If a cat is frightened in any way its fur will stand on end, making it look bigger, and it will make hissing and spitting noises. If scared, the cat's pupils will dilate to the size of tiny dark dinner plates. The comforting sound of a cat's purring can often be heard when the cat is in a relaxed mood, but can also be heard if the cat is stressed.
The cat is a natural carnivore and cannot live off of a plant based diet, mainly because plants don't have the vitamins needed for good eyesight. If a cat were to life off plants it would go blind
The cat is definetly a fascinating creature and is my favourite animal.
