About the Phoenix Program
Phoenix is a small, alternative program in Sechelt. Typically, the enrollment is less than 20 students. There are three staff: a teacher, a youth and family worker and a teaching assistant. The program staff are skilled at dealing with students with severe behaviours, emotional difficulties, and various learning difficulties. Support staff may include people such as a school counsellor or outdoor recreation teacher. The school counselor provides personal and addiction counselling, and consultation to families. Outdoor education is an important component of the program.
Phoenix operates as a self-contained program leading to graduation. All academic subjects are covered at Phoenix. Students attend PE and Art at the Sunshine Building, about three blocks away. For the most part, students work on their academic subjects independently and at their own pace. Individual and small group tutoring is available throughout the day. We work on a model of continual progress. This means that students can start and end courses throughout the year.
Our school is located in the centre of town. Consisting of two floors, the downstairs has a classroom, kitchen, lounge area and bathrooms, while the upstairs area has a quiet study area furnished with couches, desks and a bank of computers. Staff offices are also upstairs.
